Inter-counties Fell Running Championship – Buxton – 19th May 2012

Middlesex men achieved a best ever 4th place in the Inter-counties Fell Running Championship near Buxton in the Peak District on Saturday.

The demanding course over 7.5 miles/12Km included the cream of Britain’s fell runners, including 2011 National Cross-country champion (2012 silver medallist) and local international athlete Steve Vernon who took individual gold ahead of Middlesex and Thames Valley Harriers star Chris Smith who took the silver medal for the second year running, ahead of Andi Jones. Welsh international Richard Phillips of Serpentine was next for Middlesex in 19th place. Chris Beecham of Highgate Harriers was 65th (13th Vet 40) to complete the scoring team with team manager and running reserve London Heathside’s Andy Owen 85th (17th Vet 40) out of 243 finishers.

Greater Manchester won the team race ahead of Yorkshire and Lancashire – medals eluded us this time but are definitely in reach!
